Tesla Model X warning lights: 12 brake, turtle and snowflake signals
Understand 12 Tesla Model X warnings, from red brakes and TPMS to the turtle, snowflake and limited regeneration, with links to Tesla’s official manual.
A turtle, snowflake and brake warning do not call for the same response. Park safely before reading the full message. This guide separates 12 important warnings and operating indicators.

Based on Tesla’s current Model X manual, not the separate 2015–2020 version. Equipment, market and software affect the display. Brake icons shown here are official Canadian examples; some markets use BRAKE or PARK text.
Read the message as well as the color
Stop safely for a red brake warning or abnormal braking. Amber brake and ABS warnings also need prompt attention. Green or blue often describes an operating state, but reduced regeneration changes deceleration. A red PARK indicator may simply mean the parking brake is applied.
Tesla Model X warning lights: 12 brake, turtle and snowflake signals
| Priority | Indicator | Meaning | Action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stop |
Red brake |
Brake fault or low brake fluid | Stop safely; contact Tesla immediately. |
| Brakes |
Amber brake |
Booster fault or regeneration unavailable | Stop safely and check the braking instructions. |
| Urgent |
ABS |
Anti-lock braking fault | Contact Tesla immediately; check for a red brake warning. |
| Parking |
Amber parking brake |
Parking brake fault | Secure the vehicle; contact Tesla. |
| Tires |
TPMS |
Pressure out of range; flashing can mean a fault | Check cold pressures and tire damage. |
| Urgent |
Airbag |
Self-check absent or light stays on | Contact Tesla immediately. |
| Stability |
ESC / traction |
Flashing: intervention; steady: fault | Slow for conditions; contact Tesla if steady. |
| Suspension |
Amber suspension |
Reduced suspension performance | Read the message; contact Tesla if persistent. |
| Suspension |
Red suspension |
Air suspension disabled by a fault | Stop safely and ask Tesla how to proceed. |
| Cold |
Blue snowflake |
Cold limits usable energy and charging | Precondition while parked; review charge planning. |
| Deceleration |
Limited regeneration |
Lift-off deceleration may decrease | Be ready to use the brake pedal. |
| Power |
Turtle |
Output limited by energy, temperature or inverter fault | Avoid hard acceleration; stop safely to read the alert. |
Brake warnings and airbags: act before continuing
A red brake warning after the initial self-check calls for a safe stop and immediate Tesla contact. An airbag light that does not briefly appear during the self-check also needs attention. Amber brake is not the same as the green limited-regeneration indicator. Read the braking chapter if the pedal feels unusually firm or stopping changes.

TPMS: pressure and flashing mean different things
Use the cold pressure on your vehicle’s Tire and Loading Information label, not the maximum printed on the tire sidewall. Flashing for about a minute at power-on can indicate a TPMS fault. Do not release air from hot tires to reach a cold-pressure target. Arrange service for a monitoring fault.
Turtle, snowflake and reduced regeneration
A snowflake can reflect a cold battery; a turtle can also involve an inverter fault. Neither icon identifies a replacement part. A cold or highly charged battery can reduce regeneration, so leave room and be ready to brake. For high-voltage, charging-system or shutdown alerts, stop safely and follow the exact vehicle message and Tesla support instructions rather than continuing the trip.

Suspension and traction: steady versus flashing
Traction intervention can flash during wheel slip. A steady warning requires immediate Tesla contact. Amber suspension indicates reduced performance; red indicates a disabling fault. Stop and seek support if the vehicle sits unevenly or handling changes.
Find the manual for your own vehicle
While parked, open Controls and the bell icon to review alerts. Record the message, conditions and color. Model year, generation, software and region matter; the 2015–2020 manual is separate. Tesla does not provide one universal year selector on every chapter. Use its model/generation selection and the in-car manual, then request service through your vehicle in the Tesla app.
